YARRAVILLE COMMUNITY CENTRE IS HELPING MIGRANTS SETTLE

    Date:

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) provides up to 510 hours of English language tuition to eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants. This program helps them learn foundation English language and settlement skills to enable them to participate socially and economically in Australian society.

YCC also assists learners to settle into their new community enabling them to learn about:

    • Australian culture and customs
    • Health (Medicare, health emergencies)
    • Money (social security & Centrelink)
    • Housing (rental properties)
    • Transport
    • Education (education system)
    • Employment (looking for a job)
    • The law (police and other laws)

Further support is provided with guest speakers from various organisations/agencies in the classroom. Excursions are also an integral part of the AMEP program and give learners an opportunity to explore various areas of Melbourne and visit main tourist attractions, providing positive outcomes such as:

    • Developing English language skills through an experience based program
    • Learning to navigate the public transport system
    • Developing confidence to venture out further to places with family

The AMEP also provides home tutoring and free childcare services for participants with children under school age whilst participating in AMEP classes.
