From Louise Williams of The Excercise Room

When coming to the gym you’re always better off coming in with a plan. There is so much discourse online and on social-media claiming that this ‘influencer’s’ program of training twice a day, 6 days a week, only eating roasted chicken and broccoli is the best way to train etc. This generally won’t work for you because it’s not designed for YOU. The best gym program for you is the one designed around YOUR training goals and YOUR availability.

Generally, the people who have recently signed up to a gym have one or two main goals; to lose weight and/or to build strength. If your goal is to increase full body strength, but you can only come 1-2 times per week, I would recommend completing 3 upper body and 3 lower body exercises on the same day. This is because the major muscles in your body need to be stimulated at least twice per week to see any substantial growth. However, if you have a greater availability and can make it to the gym 3 or more times a week, then splitting up your muscle group for different days can be extremely beneficial.

Splitting up your muscle groups to specific days allows for maximum stimulus for these areas; for example if you train your upper body on Monday, you’ll then be able to train your lower body on Tuesday, as those muscles would not have been used the day prior. By using the split muscle group program, you’ll also be able to train the smaller muscle groups such as biceps, triceps and calves which would not get trained as often if you could only come 1-2 times a week.

It’s important to remember that a program that serves YOUR needs and is achieving YOUR goals is a great program for you, no matter what goals and results other people have.  And don’t forget that if you are wanting to change up your program or want to start getting into specific training, feel free to reach out to The Exercise Room to set up a complimentary personal training session.
