The anime/manga communities have been plagued in recent years in regards to poor live action adaptations of their favourite series. However Netflix may have become a beacon of hope with their most recent adaptation of the adventure pirate series One Piece.

Created in June of 1997 by Japanese creator Eiichiro Oda, and spanning over a thousand chapters, One Piece follows a group of characters called ‘Straw Hat Pirates’ on their quest to find the elusive treasure left by the infamous Gol D. Roger, the One Piece. Captaining this misfit group of pirates is Monkey D. Luffy, whose goal is to find the One Piece and become the King of the Pirates. This is one of my favourite series of all time and when I heard it was getting the live action adaptation treatment I was sceptical but that diminished once I saw the trailer and learned two things. Firstly, Eiichiro Oda oversaw the whole production, and secondly, all the sets and every ship are all real built especially for this series.

One Piece is a beautiful love letter to Oda-san and the series as a whole. The character portrayals are perfect and any tweaks made to the storyline are welcome changes. It’s not all butterflies and rainbows, though some performances were hit or miss and the rushing of certain character developments really hinder the overall story if you’re a die hard fan. Overall though it’s a great piece of media, regardless if you are brand new to One Piece or if you are a die hard fan.
