NOMADIK: Brimbank community art in motion

    Date:

    By Mito Elias

NOMADIK is a community-driven art initiative that invites participants to explore spontaneous creativity while emphasizing sustainability as a core value for collective well-being.

In partnership with Brimbank City Council, Fandata Studio is pleased to offer two free community art workshops in April and May. These workshops present an exciting opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage in the creative process and contribute to a collaborative public art project that will be displayed in a prominent location.

These workshops are open to individuals of all ages and skill levels, fostering an inclusive and welcoming creative environment. The theme of the workshops is ‘The Centre of My Hearth,’ with participants invited to create individual puzzle pieces using sustainable materials. These pieces will later be assembled into a large-scale paste-up mural, symbolising community unity and collective creativity. The finished artwork will be prominently displayed on a wall in Sunshine, leaving a lasting visual representation of collaboration and artistic expression.

Fandata Studio, led by artists Ana Rita Pires and Mito Elias, is dedicated to creating community-based, sustainable art. Since arriving in Melbourne in 2013, the duo has built an extensive portfolio, working with various community groups, cultural organisations, and local councils. Fandata Studio has collaborated with institutions such as the Brimbank City Council, City of Melbourne, ArtPlay, and Signal, and has also worked in countries like Timor-Leste, Cape Verde, Portugal, and Brazil. Through their work they foster inclusivity, sustainability, and creativity, empowering participants to engage with art in meaningful ways while minimising environmental impact through the use of recycled materials.

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.
