The Westsider is a not-for-profit, monthly community newspaper, written by volunteers and delivered to hundreds of pick-up points across the inner west each month.

Konker Malual – Amplifying the voices of young migrant creatives

Konker Malual sits under fairy lights and looks out to the tightly packed crowd as the smell of Ethiopian food and incense wafts in the air. The beats of DJ Aucun Alias infuse the atmosphere. Konker is the founder of The Rest of Us (TROU), a non-profit organisation helping disadvantaged youth to discover their voice and share their unique stories.

A new generation of aged care workers ready to take on the world

There was a buzz in the air at Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing recently when 39 students received certificates enabling them to work in an Aged Care setting. The participants all hailed from countries including Tibet, Ethiopia, Thailand and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Show Your WEST-SIDE Art Prize and Exhibition is back to celebrate local creatives

As a Footscray artist known as LaDY MoHaWK, I am excited to announce the upcoming Show Your WEST-SIDE Art Prize and Exhibition 2024. This free public art exhibition offers a unique opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents. The theme for this year’s exhibition is ‘Westside Stories,’ inviting artists to explore and depict the diverse experiences, stories, and landscapes found within the west of Melbourne.

Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon brings her Object Of Projection to Newport’s Substation

Most know Kim Gordon as the co-founder of alt-rock band Sonic Youth. From 1981 to 2011 their atonal sounds won them the sort of indie cred few have equalled. Since the band’s breakup Gordon has continued her adventures in music and sound whilst experimenting with film, writing, acting, painting and design. While all these aspects of her work appear in the exhibition Object of Projection, now showing at The Substation in Newport, four short films form its clamorous beating heart.have equalled.

More than a pub, the Anglers Tavern is a local social icon with a liquid history dating back to the 1860s. Originally known by many names, Anglers Arms, Anglers Rest and Anglers Hotel, it has weathered floods and reinvented itself through the years.
