In December of last year, I had the privilege of joining the Deputy Mayor of Maribyrnong City Council, Samantha Meredith to participate in the Food for Change event at Papelon, Footscray.
The event was initiated by Veronica Perez, a resident of Derrimut and the founder of Supernova Collection Co.
The Supernova Collection Co supports the local Latin community in the western suburbs and beyond, by offering culturally appropriate meals to those in need.
“I’ve lived in the West for around 19 years, and what I love most about Deer Park is the sense of community. It’s a place where people from all walks of life come together. The West has this unique mix of culture, growth, and humility — it truly feels like home,” says Veronica.
The funding for the project was sourced from the proceeds of a fashion runway show titled “El Surgimiento Del Fénix – The Rise of the Phoenix” which she organised in July 2025.
Supported by Latin Stories Australia, Ezi Streat, and Papelon, Food for Change supplied meals to 30 registered individuals.

Papelon is a venue recognised for its lively and energetic ambiance, situated in the very centre of Footscray. Guests ordered from the selection of arepas on offer including Ranchera (beef, chorizo, corn, cheese) Pelua (beef, cheese), Domino (black beans, cheese, avocado), Reina (chicken avocado) and much more. Drinks were provided by Ezi Streat.
By bringing together diverse individuals and organisations, the initiative not only addressed food insecurity but also strengthened community bonds, creating a supportive network that uplifts those facing challenges.
On why she chose to initiate this, Veronica shared that Food for Change came from a simple belief that if we are part of a community, we should contribute to it.
”I’ve seen the West grow into an incredible hub of food, culture, and opportunity, but I also see people who are still struggling. I wanted to help bridge that gap — even in a small way. As a migrant myself, I know what it feels like to require support. I’m grateful for how much Australia helped me when I arrived, and I felt it was time to give back to those who are now in need. Creating this initiative is my way of supporting locals, showing gratitude, and reminding everyone that community isn’t just about living side-by-side — it’s about caring for one another.”
Deputy Mayor Meredith shared on her Instagram page “What was offered at Papelon was a symbol of community, connection, and a celebration of Latin culture. I want to thank everyone involved for bringing this event to life. Wonderful to see local businesses like Papelon support such a great initiative.”
When we asked Veronica about her plans for Supernova moving forward?
“I want Supernova to grow not just as a brand but as a movement. My focus is on expanding our fashion collection, collaborating with more local creatives, and increasing the community projects we support. My goal is to continue empowering women, celebrating cultural diversity, and using fashion as a platform for unity and positive change. ”
