    WINE VS WINE

    Date:

With Richard Slater & Grant Foulkes

    Richard says:

    2018 Jim Barry Watervale Riesling
12.5%, Clare Valley, South Australia RRP $20

For this summer’s drinking with white meats, fish, or Asian foods, Riesling is keenly priced for budget-conscious drinkers.  This young wine is loaded with – deserved – bling. It’s a very pale colour, with riotous scents of talc, lemon, musk, blossom and passionfruit. The palate is thrillingly vibrant, with clean, lasting citrus-driven fruit flavours. And it will mature gracefully for many years. Once tasted, further purchases are predicted.

    Conclusion: Outstanding quality and value.

    Grant says:

    2017 Oakridge Meunier
13.7%, Yarra Valley, Victoria RRP, $28

If you can’t tear yourself away from reds over summer, give this a go. Similar in style to Pinot and commonly blended in Champagne, it’s hard to find as a single varietal; but in the capable hands of Oakridge’s winemakers, expect fresh ripe, red berries over the palate and a soft, savoury finish.

Conclusion:  Pair with pulled pork tacos!
