TIPS AND TOOLS FOR A HEALTHIER LIFE… DECEMBER 2019

    INCREASE YOUR IRON

Did you know you can increase your iron intake by eating vitamin C rich foods? Try kiwi fruit and red capsicum alongside plant-based iron rich, leafy greens, spinach, lentils and beans daily.

Include these with  foods we eat for our iron intake.

Avoid tea or coffee consumed with meals as polyphenols bind to these iron sources, thus decreasing our iron absorption. Enjoy.

    HIP FLEXORS

For runners and walkers, your hip flexors can play a big role in back stiffness and pain.  To stretch, kneel on one knee with the other leg at a 90° angle. Lean forwards from the hips keeping spine straight. Hold for 30 secs. Swap legs.

This will help reduce strain on your hips and lower back plus minimise injuries.

    HEADACHES

Acupuncturists apply pressure to this spot on the hand to relieve pain, particularly headaches. This in turn can induce calmness. Massage this point in a circle while you apply some pressure from both front and back of point. Go gently as it can be tender! Use this spot on both hands for benefit.

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

    Did you know?

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.

If you're a business or community group, consider advertising in print or online, or becoming a community partner.
