    GAYBY BABY – REVIEW

    Date:

Quick is what you will need to be if you want to see Maya Newell’s challenging documentary Gayby Baby at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre.

That this film is even controversial says much about the conservative bubble we find ourselves in currently in Australia. Newell takes a different angle in her focus on the everyday lives and struggles of four 12 year olds, kids you’d call typical at a glance if it weren’t for one thing – all four are being raised by same-sex couples.

Only the children speak to the camera – the adults and their relationships become the wallpaper to the kid’s daily activities. The result is a thought (and discussion) provoking journey with each of these four families, as you ride every wave of success whilst feeling the pain of growth and uncertainty in what is ultimately a triumph for the participants and viewer.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
