MAMAWEST 3X AUSTRALIAN HAIR INDUSTRY AWARD FINALISTS

    Date:

Hair has no gender was born from the desire to change the landscape of hairdressing by working with models from the LGBTQIA+, Transgender & Non-Binary communities to raise awareness, have conversations & create more visibility for these individuals.

I was also inspired to create a safe space in my salon for all beings, inspired by my ever-growing clientele’s needs to feel safe, heard, understood and accepted no matter who they are.

The hairdressing industry is slowly shifting, much like fashion. In a true celebration of diversity, many of my models were employed by Melbourne Fashion Week.

Gender is one of the most talked about topics of 2022 and I believe the time is NOW to create a movement and advocate for change. There is room for everyone in this world, no matter who they are.

My wish is that our industry & our community moves away from the terms male & female. Moving towards gender neutral pricing, while introducing ourselves with our pronouns to create a safe space for all humans.

On the 9th of May 2022, Inner West’s FAVOURITE new hair salon were deemed 3x finalists for Apprentice of the year,  New Creative Force & the HOT SHOTS category. This is one of the winning collections featured that we’d like to showcase & spread the message across the wild west!

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

    Did you know?

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.

If you're a business or community group, consider advertising in print or online, or becoming a community partner.
