    The Willy beach proposed redevelopment

I’m sure anyone who gets in trouble in the water, on the beach, in the vicinity, and needs help, will appreciate that it’s there then. This is not a private club; like all lifesaving clubs, members actually pay to then volunteer to save lives and keep the beach safe, sometimes risking their own safety. Redevelopment is needed to ensure this continues. I’m 100% sure I want a skilled, qualified, able person there if I ever need it.

There has been plenty of opportunity over the years for feedback on this, with the council arranging and promoting the opportunity many many times. Whilst the cost is a lot, it seems on par with similar initiatives.

The facilities are sub par now and not fit for purpose, so something needs to be done and soon.

Don’t forget the club not only has life saving, but trains and engages many hundreds of nippers each year in water safety. I am not querying this at all knowing that my son is safer in the water as a lifetime skill from WSLSC.

Meanwhile BayFit Leisure Centre is literally falling apart…surely the life saving club either has to be open to public, fund its project itself, or scale scope back rather than pan-handle while Hobsons Bay City Council can barely manage rubbish collections.

I just looked over the plans. There will be two accessible change rooms which are also designated for families to use. They have the only baby change tables in the building – not sure why they couldn’t put baby change tables in the main change rooms or any of the other bathrooms throughout the building, instead of with the only two showers that people with mobility aids will be able to use. This is really disappointing. I’d hope SLSV and Surf Life Saving Australia would be keen to have people with disabilities join in the fun, enjoy the surf, and volunteer, but that’s going to be mighty hard when there’s no way for many of them to go to the toilet or get changed.

It’s very distressing having a rinse in front of others so that everyone can see in that open area. Lining up for 1/2 an hour to do so is ridiculous. What about the toilets, 40 minutes on a hot summer day.

Current facilities are not acceptable. There is limited toileting and shower facilities for the number of persons who frequent the beach. Shading is another feature very lacking. This effects some of our most vulnerable.

    The old Footscray Hospital site

I would love to see a park made and the old psych ward become a creative arts centre with writers rooms, community gallery space, youth arts programs etc. It would be good to acknowledge that history of the building with a permanent exhibition too.

It would make a great art gallery. Could be like a Heide Museum for the inner west
