Senthill Sundaram

Date:

Champion for public transport in the West

By Ruby Fox

Senthill Sundaram’s goal is one that will change the public transport industry and more importantly, change lives. When Senthill moved to Melbourne’s western suburbs, he noticed that access to public transport left much to be desired.

Since 2015, Senthill has been a part of the Point Cook Action Group, advocating for better roads, infrastructure, and public transport.

Inspired by public transport in India, Senthill helped create WYNBUS, a non profit group which  advocates for the use of mini buses which can better navigate the many narrow roads in the outer West.

After running trials in 2019 WYNBUS received a surplus of positive feedback from the community, but faced some hardship during 2020 due to COVID-19.

Since then, the government tried to replicate the organisation’s ideas, but seemingly failed to execute the project properly. It received poor feedback from the community and ultimately came to an end.

Senthill however is adamant that the initiative can work. Senthill is challenging all his local MPs to make the morning commute from the outer West to State parliament and see if they can arrive on time, without a hitch. That’s the only way they’ll witness first hand how hard it is. Hopefully that will persuade them.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
