A story in our August edition generated lots of comment and engagement on our social media pages recently.
It was the story about the proposed renovation of the Williamstown Swimming & Life Saving Club. The author was none too pleased about the current renovation plans and expressed his displeasure, adamantly. Some of the responses questioned our publication of an un-balanced story.
So this seems like a great opportunity to remind readers that most of the stories published in The Westsider are written by passionate community members, not journalists, and so they don’t adhere to journalistic procedure. If ever you read something that you disagree with, all you have to do is submit your own story to editor@thewestsider.com.au.
As long as a submission is; written by a Westie, about the western suburbs, not defamatory, does not contain hate speech, it will most likely be published.
However, The Westsider does also publish some stories written by journalism students or recent graduates, and as such these stories do follow journalistic guidelines. In order to help readers distinguish between the two types of submissions we’ll now make a note at the end of all stories written by journalism hopefuls.
The Westsider is committed to fostering engagement and interest in civics, and creating opportunities for young writers and journalists to practice their trade. This month we’ll be announcing how our efforts have been recognised and rewarded via a prestigious international journalism award. Stay tuned on our socials. We couldn’t be more chuffed!
