Are you a member of a political party, political group, or community advocacy group? (eg; Labor, Liberal, Greens, Socialist, My Place, Angry Victorians, Better West, environment groups, etc)

I am not now, nor have I ever been affiliated with any political party. I am actively involved in environmental organizations such as Greening the West, Friends of Kororoit Creek, and Friends of Iramoo.

What is the most important issue facing your electorate?

Brimbank has the highest gambling losses of any LGA in the state – at a staggering $473,687 daily.  Perhaps this contributes significantly to the council experiencing the  second-highest level of rates in arrears?

Should/how can Council support local businesses?

Council needs to review its business model and streamline processes to encourage more  local businesses. I will advocate for these changes to support sustainable development and benefit the community.

Should/how can Council support local creatives and industries?

I will advocate strongly for greater engagement with creative artists and artisans. I would love to see artistic mini communities emerge throughout Brimbank; places where arts and crafts are not just celebrated but thriving, and engaging all sections of community.

Should/how can Council help alleviate the impact of climate extremes on local communities and ecosystems?

This really requires a whole of Government approach. I’m passionate about increasing tree canopy cover in Brimbank. I think splash parks, like the ones in Aintree, would be a great way to create cooler, more inviting public spaces for everyone.

Should/how can Council help alleviate cost of living and homelessness?

There are many causal factors when it comes to cost of living, but I do believe that there are a few things that local government can do to alleviate financial and homelessness stress.  One particular matter that I am passionate about is the inadequate public transport in the west. To address this, I propose implementing the Dr John Stone bus remodelling and a direct route to Melbourne Airport. These measures would alleviate poverty, create jobs, and in turn reduce homelessness. Additionally, Council must address rates hardship and advocate with State and Federal Governments for an increase in sustainable, ethical and appropriate social housing to support those in need.

What should Council stop spending money on?

Council should conduct a comprehensive review of its spending and be more selective about the suitability of projects that it spends money on.  I also believe significant savings could be made if Council were to implement performance-based incentives for senior staff, to ensure efficiency and accountability.

Should the public be allowed to ask live, unscripted questions of councillors during council meetings?

Yes, and I would support a trial period of live, unscripted Q&A sessions between Councillors and the public. This would increase transparency and accountability.  It should be noted that optional (for Councillors) online public forums that would have allowed this, for one hour 10 times a year, was moved as a motion by Cr Maria Kerr. It was overridden and dramatically revised by Cr Rasic, with support from the Labor controlled Councillors. This needs to change, to encourage public trust and accountability from all Councillors.

Can you please provide a short personal statement detailing what your priorities are if elected, and what your vision for your electorate looks like.

My priorities include improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability within Brimbank Council. I will advocate for an organizational review, a transparency hub (where people can easily find out information regarding Council decisions, justified rate increases, open debate, and recorded public meetings (to be made available on the council website for review by residents). I envision a revitalized Brimbank with vibrant amenities, accessible public transport, and a focus on sustainability.

On your behalf we have asked every candidate who put their hand up to stand in Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham the same set of questions that were formulated with the feedback of the Westsider readers.

Our thanks goes to first year RMIT Journalism students, who helped contact candidates as part of their final assessment in COMM2835, Journalism: Reporting and Writing.

A big shout out to Dr Josie Vine, a Westsider regular, who coordinated the project and Dr Sharon Smith who so graciously lent us her students and devised the activity as part of their assessment.
