    ZONA, SUNSHINE

    Date:

Everybody loves a good local pizza joint, and good pizza is what the folk at ZONA do best.

Situated in what used to be an old rotisserie chicken shop along a shopping strip in Braybrook, ZONA – Pizza & Canteen brings a new energy into the area. Festoon bulbs light up the corner unit at night, and the walls are adorned with plants and pizza-inspired pop art.

The menu is a decent size, with a number of tasty vegetarian/vegan and gluten-free options. Seasonal salads, house-made lasagne and desserts are also on offer. The handmade arancini, eggplant polpette and panzerotto are extremely more-ish, and make for great entrees or mid-afternoon snacks.

The pizza itself is of the thin-crust variety, setting Zona apart from the more hefty offerings of local stalwarts like Speedy’s and The Rollin Dough. A lot of trial, error and experimentation went into developing the 48-hour double-proofed dough, and it shows. The crust – while light and airy – is surprisingly sturdy and holds up well to transportation. It also performs well on the next-day re-heat, crisping up well in the oven or a toaster press.

Ingredients and sauces are prepared in-house with care, so whether you order a simple Margherita or the more ‘fancy’ Salsiccia Friarielli, you can be assured of a satisfying experience. Pizzas are priced between $16 – $26 and come in one standard size. Owner-operators, friends and Sunshine locals Nanette, Ariele and Dennis have decades of hospitality experience between them. Despite their disagreements about the place of pineapple on pizza (yes, there is a Hawaiian on the menu!), they have banded together to give the people what they want – great pizza with a whole lot of heart.

At present, ZONA is a take-away/delivery only business. Orders can be made via phone or through their website. They are also on both Uber Eats and Door Dash. There are plans for extended opening hours, dine-in seating and coffee in the future, so stay tuned for announcements via their socials.
