    TWO WESTSIDE PUBS

    Date:

    Words by Nathan Murua

One of the Westside’s good pubs, which is made better by Friday and Saturday night events that occur weekly, is The Watergardens Hotel. It is a good open venue with separate bars and also has a smokers area in the back which lots of people would rather use than go all the way to the front of the venue. The bar staff at Watergardens are friendly and talk with their costumers more than most other bar staff.

It is also a good place to watch a game of Rugby or AFL, the drinks and food are served at affordable prices, and these can be ordered and served at either bar. Don’t think that Watergardens is only for adults either, they always hold different kind of events that children can come and enjoy as well, for instance Watergardens holds ‘Kids Fun days’, including a magician with live animals, balloon twisting, face painting, gifts for kids, and a free lunch and cold drinks.

Watergardens has other nights for people that love late night drinks and dancing, the last event that passed was the UV theme party which featured DJ’s, drink specials, and a good environment.. No matter what kind of music you’re into – RnB, Hip hop, House, Pop, Top 100 – the genre changes on the night..

The other place of interest is the Derrimut Hotel in Sunshine. It’s a bar and bistro with affordable food and beverages, and specials such as Free Keno with every meal purchased. If you sign up to be a member you get drink specials at the Thirsty Camel – and there’s a Thirsty Camel next door! Events are usually held in the Bistro but sometimes the bar may have an event, for instance for Spring Carnival or Christmas.

The waiting staff are kind, talkative, and entertaining, you can easily rely on their getting to you and taking the necessities back any time of the day. The cooks are great for a bar and bistro, the quality of the food is good, and the cooks are always having fun, telling jokes and working hard.

Nothing stops the Derrimut Hotel from being a relaxing yet crazy environment, I myself used to work there as a waiter and kitchen hand, so from personal experience it’s a good place, with a usual age group of patrons between 30-40.

In conclusion, The Watergardens Hotel and Derrimut Hotel are places in the western suburbs that should interest you, no matter what kind of day or night you want. These places are open to all people of all ages. Give it a good go, enjoy each moment – I might be a DJ at one of the night events!

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
