PERSONAL TRAINERS – HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU

    Date:

As we step back into life after lockdown, many of us are finding our exercise goals are changing, and working with a personal trainer can be a fantastic way to meet them.

Whether you’re looking to train for an event, start lifting weights, or are just refocusing on your physical health, finding the right personal trainer for you may feel daunting at first. Like with dating, there’s a trainer out there for everyone — determining what your exercise goals might look like is a great place to start.

    Looking at qualifications and practicalities

Just like a job interview, you’re allowed to ask for a personal trainer’s references and qualifications. Make sure they have liability insurance, which indicates they have the necessary qualifications to receive it.

Ask about their rates and cancellation policies; you should expect a cancellation fee if you don’t come to a scheduled session. It’s good to ask if they have sessions available for your preferred times as well.

    Finding compatibility with a trainer

Don’t be afraid to interview personal trainers — you may even want to book one session to start with.

It’s important that a trainer listens to your full story. You may have prior injuries that could impact your exercise, and an adept trainer should ask about these and factor them into your goals.

A competent trainer will have knowledge of nutrition, but they can usually recommend you to a dietetic professional should you seek one.

Personal trainers don’t have to be body builders or have particular physiques to be competent — however, they should lead healthy lifestyles, and have experience in the exercise area you are interested in.

    Feeling supported and establishing goals

Just like your regular hairdresser, your personal trainer should feel confidable and trustworthy.

They should help you set practical expectations for your fitness goals, and it’s a good sign if you feel like you can see yourself working with them long term. Whatever your exercise aspirations, a good PT will help you create a realistic plan and time frame, and help you stay motivated.

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

    Did you know?

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
