We’re fast approaching the pointy end of the democratic process. In next month’s state election we’ll be asked once again to decide who governs Victoria anew. A vibrant democracy, though, relies on so much more than people turning up to vote once every four years and buying a sausage on the way out. Between elections there needs to be an informed and engaged citizenry going about the business of building local coalitions to hold both government and bureaucracies to account.
People, Place and Power, produced by the Borderlands Cooperative for Westsider Radio, is one show seeking to do just this.
‘The premise of the show is that, in order to help make change, our community needs to be both well informed and clear where we can best apply pressure,’ says Peter Gartside of Borderlands, who co-presents with Terri Soumilas. ‘Our experience and knowledge of social issues, politics and campaigning in Melbourne’s west is wide. We want the show to be a place to discuss important issues that affect everyday life for Westies. There’s a lot of great work being done in the West and we want to showcase some of that also. We’re passionate about giving exposure to marginalised voices.’
People, Place and Power takes the time to go deep into the issues with guests. ‘So far we’ve covered the hot issue of data centres, anti-racism and the health of our rivers and waterways, among other topics,’ Peter adds. ‘We hope the show can develop into a conversation between the Borderlands team who produce it, and the listeners. And establish ourselves as a useful source of information and inspiration for Westies.’
People, Place and Power next airs 29 October at 10am and repeats 7pm. For past episodes, please visit the Westsider Radio’s website. Happy listening.
