Như Đá with Cape Verdean artist Mito Elias and Vietnamese cultural advocate Anh Cường

    By Milo Elias

Như Đá is a multidisciplinary project emerging from the polyglot landscape of Footscray, where my mother tongue—Cape Verdean Creole—remains paradoxically absent.

This silence creates a linguistic and emotional void that my practice seeks to fill through a space of resonance.

In this project, Creole and Vietnamese poems are translated and reread, creating a sensory bridge where languages don’t just exchange meaning, but learn to listen to one another.

The sonic composition blends Vietnamese percussion with Atlantic winds, evoking diasporic memory and shared presence. The title Như Đá embodies this encounter: in Vietnamese, it means like a stone; in Creole, please, give.

This graphic coincidence reveals the fertile space between differences. Như Đá is an invitation to sonic coexistence—a practice of listening that transforms isolation into encounter, proving that where language is absent, sound can create a profound shared resonance.

We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
