The Joel Gallery is showcasing local youth talent in a first of its kind, in an all kids only photography exhibition between 25 February to 10 March 2022. A snapshot in time, when we were restricted to move only 5kms from home. Where Altona kids stopped to adventure and reflect on the beauty close to home.
The forty images with the themes from tiny insects to wondrous landscapes, are from the finalists that were produced in a photography competition that ran over spring in 2021. They show creativity and originality that only come from the unique perspectives of kids. Utilising somewhat sophisticated photography techniques in their use of light, colour and composition.
The competition, 5kms of Natural Wonders’ in and around Altona, was founded by local professional photographer Ruth Schwarzenholz. She ran the free competition with the help of her 8 year old daughter Kira. They wanted to inspire kids’ creativity and lift spirits over the lockdown. The competition also helped take the pressure off parents. It provided an activity to support happier and healthier kids with time away from the screen, yet still develop their creative and photography skills.
Joel Gallery is part of the Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre, which supports local artists to engage with the community and supports community wellness through creativity and culture. The Centre manager, Gina Kennedy told us why she was inspired to host this latest exhibition, “My imagination was sparked, to see their [children’s] journey, and wonder who Altona’s next artist might be.”
This was as she reflected on the journey of a local emerging artist Bonnie Lee. Bonnie is currently an intern at the gallery and recently finish their visual arts degree. Seeing Bonnie’s journey has inspired Gina to include this latest exhibition at the gallery. Bonnie’s first exhibition as a primary school student with the Joel Gallery. Her first adult exhibition is set for later this year.
The exhibition opening night is 25 February 6pm – 8pm by invitation only.
