Newport Fiddle and Folk Club
The sound of music, rhythm and laughter fills the Mechanics Hall at the Newport Community Hub.
At first glance, it can seem like a group of people simply enjoying music together. But look a little closer and you’ll see that something much more powerful is happening.
Friendships are being formed. Confidence is growing. People are finding a place where they truly belong and where they can be part of a community that encourages them to be creative.
It’s happening through two community groups run by the Newport Fiddle & Folk Club – the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club Drummers and the All Abilities Music Group.
The greatest achievement of these groups isn’t measured in performances or concerts. It’s measured in smiles, confidence and connection.
Initially, people may come through the door feeling nervous because they’ve never played an instrument before or because they’re unsure whether they’ll fit in. Within a short time, they’re making music, laughing with new friends and becoming part of a community where everyone is welcome. Something truly unique.
Music is widely known to improve health and wellbeing in ways that extend far beyond entertainment. Both of these groups deliver those benefits many times over!
What makes the All Abilities Music Group so special is that it enables people who identify as disabled and/or neurodivergent to create and enjoy music in a supportive, friendly, judgement-free environment. The group is open to people with and without disabilities. Musicians of all levels and abilities can come together to enjoy music.
The group is for anyone over the age of 15. It is led by some of the youngest members of the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club – many of whom have a disability or identify as neurodivergent. Support is provided by other members of the NFFC, who are always happy to learn a new song, teach a new chord, and join in the fun!
The sessions are spirited and joyful, and are a testament to the idea that music truly is for everyone. For the Newport Fiddle & Folk Club, that’s exactly what community music should achieve.
For more than 20 years, the club has been creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience music in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
The club welcomes anyone interested in giving music a try. No previous experience is necessary — just a willingness to join in.
