Get Online Week at Yarraville Community Centre

    Date:

Get Online Week in Australia is a Good Things Foundation digital inclusion campaign celebrated annually. Designed to enhance digital literacy across the nation, it serves as a catalyst for encouraging people to embrace and utilize digital technology. The impact of this annual initiative is astounding, with 2023’s campaign seeing over 23,000 people being reached with digital skills support, and over 1000 community events being held.

Older Australians often finding themselves on the disadvantaged side of the digital divide, with contributing factors such as hesitance in adopting technology due to a lack of confidence, unfamiliarity with devices, or limited access to training and support. Many older community members grew up relying on traditional methods for everyday tasks like banking, shopping, and communication, which have all been transformed by digital advancements.

Recognizing these challenges and supported by Good Things Foundation, Yarraville Community Centre will be hosting an insightful Free workshop on Wednesday 16th October for community members as part of Get Online Week. The workshop will focus on Digital Storytelling, where participants will be invited to write about life experiences and memoirs using word processing and publishing software.

Being supported with digital mentors, attendees will use Microsoft Word to create their own document, research significant locations, be shown how to upload photographs and incorporate links to websites. In addition, they’ll explore a free publishing tool like Heyzine that allows them to customize their stories, enhance the appearance with colours, images, videos, and links. Once completed, they can share their stories with family and friends through email and messaging tools like WhatsApp. Attendees will have the chance to ask questions and receive personalized support, helping to build their confidence and independence in using technology. It’s a wonderfully creative and hands on workshop where we encourage community members to register and join, where free lunch will also be provided.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
