Laksa Hut, tucked away at one end of Anderson Street in Yarraville (next to Metro) offers a real treat for fans of Malaysian food.
The restaurant’s modern decor and spacious seating create a welcoming atmosphere, making it ideal for both solo dining and group gatherings. The interior is adorned in warm orange tones and decorated with large photo frames, each profiling a classic Malaysian dish.
They also have some bar-like seating at the front of the restaurant, which can be opened during warmer days (it was when I visited). It’s a great spot for people watching and Yarraville sure is a hive of activities.
Most patrons come in for laksa; the delicious bowls of rich, creamy coconut curry broth, often served with chicken, beef, seafood or vegetables.

Laksa Hut is a good option for those who prefer less spicy notes in their food or have a low tolerance for spice. Their broth is on the sweet side, so I think it may suit some patrons, but I requested some chilli oil to balance the flavour out.
Though the laksa wasn’t my favourite, as I prefer mine spicy, I highly recommend their main dishes. The menu here is designed to appeal to local tastes, offering familiar dishes that resonate with the Australian palate such as Mongolian beef, Singapore noodles and pineapple fried rice. For the unfamiliar, I think this is a great way to try Malaysian food.
Their Malaysian Curry Chicken is delicious, aromatic and flavourful. The combination of spices reminds me of the chicken curries in Malaysia which have subtle differences from Indian curries.
Their salt and pepper calamari – tender calamari coated in well-seasoned batter, fried until golden and crunchy, then tossed with beautiful aromatic spices is a delightful dish.
Both dishes are best enjoyed with steamed rice.
The serving size here is generous and service is friendly, and prompt. They have vegetarian and gluten-free options to cater for a diverse selection of guests.
There is also a limited wine list and BYO is welcome.
