    Yarraville public toilets a disgrace!

I have a possible suggestion for an article/reader survey that may shame our local councils into actioning the state of disrepair and unsightliness of our public facilities

A case in point; the only public toilets in Yarraville at the bus terminal

It’s not like we want to take our date here for dinner, but how can this be considered normal?

Considering Yarraville is a tourist mecca, I’d give this a 2 out of 10 (only because the toilets still flush)

What are other public toilets like in the west…the good the bad & the…?

    Cannon fodder

A local landmark with curious tourist appeal is those brooding malevolent-looking Cannons located at John Morley Reserve on Williamstown foreshore. They really creep me out. I dislike seeing children clamouring over  military equipment as if it were a playground

In the 1860s an irrational fear of a Russian naval invasion, sounds familiar, saw the then-Colony of Victoria deploy the Cannons to defend the City.

On my early morning cycle ride today , I was pleased to see that the offending cannons had been repurposed as a symbol of peace and protest, but alas, only briefly, before the local council graffiti squad, acting on a complaint,  washed away any resistance.

From tree delays to democratic decay?

For more than 12 months, the [Maribyrnong] Council failed to carry out a written promise to remove a mature Ash tree. When residents pressed, they were told the long delay was due to awaiting Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) approval. Yet the ‘approval’ was claimed only after residents pressed publicly — and no supporting documentation has been released. This raises doubts about whether an application ever existed in the first place.

This pattern of ‘claims without proof’ is not isolated. Last year, Acting CEO Lisa King assured residents that an Employee Code of Conduct was ‘in place’, but despite repeated requests, Council has never produced it.

Adding to this, leadership instability has further weakened oversight. Then-Mayor Cr Pradeep Tiwari resigned after being issued a court arrest warrant. The CEO, Ms Celia Haddock, has been on annual leave since 20 August and has now returned since Monday 8 September — at a moment when scrutiny and accountability are most urgently needed.
