Tarneit community unites for sustainable art project

Date:

By Sally Walshe

I am thrilled to be leading an exciting new art project called Penrose Repurposed – Sustainable Art Experiences!

This art event is in collaboration with Wyndham Council, where we will transform used PVC signage into stunning, sustainable artwork made by the community. This initiative is all about bringing families and community members in Tarneit together to create something meaningful while also helping to beautify Penrose Place, Tarneit.

One of my biggest passions is sustainability in the arts, and this project is a perfect example of how we can give new life to discarded materials. By using recycled and excess paint, we’re not only reducing waste but also encouraging artistic expression and a deeper sense of community connection. I believe that when people come together to create, something truly special happens.

To make this project a success, I’ve needed the business community to respond too. Thanks to Wattyl Paint Centre Hoppers Crossing, Paint Spot Footscray, Dulux, and Colortek, who are generously sponsoring our project by providing donations of leftover and mistint acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is ideal for our participants, who will range from young children to adults, and it’s a community-driven effort.

The event is scheduled for four days: 28th February, 1st, 14th, and 15th March. The first three sessions will involve painting large artworks and we are very fortunate to also have the help of expert artist and muralist, Justine McCallister.

On the 15 March, we are lucky to have Master Weaver Aunty Vicki Kinai who will teach weaving techniques to integrate between the paintings, further beautifying the fence. I can’t wait to see the creativity that will emerge.

Once completed, the artworks will be displayed on fencing around Penrose Place turning the space into a vibrant outdoor gallery connecting the local community to the space with their own artworks for all to enjoy.

This is an all ages and abilities project and open to everyone but spaces are limited. To register for your free ticket go to;

I’m currently gathering supplies to prepare the PVC signage and ensure we have everything we need for the day.

If you or your business would like to contribute, I’d love to hear from you. You can reach me at Sally@ladymohawk.com.au or 0404 253 386. Every bit of support helps in bringing this vision to life, and I can’t wait to share this journey with our wonderful community!

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.
