Sons of the West celebrates 10 years of changing lives

Date:

By Adiba Mohammed

For the past decade the Sons of the West program has empowered men across Melbourne’s west to take control of their health and wellbeing.

A flagship initiative of the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation, Sons of the West is a free 10-week health and wellbeing program designed to support men in making healthier lifestyle choices. Over the years, thousands of men have participated in engaging workshops and activities focused on physical and mental wellbeing, social connection, and personal development.

More than just a program, Sons of the West has grown into a community movement, with men forming lifelong friendships, building confidence, and taking proactive steps toward a healthier future. The program’s impact goes beyond numbers—it’s about the stories of transformation, resilience, and friendship.

In December 2024, the program proudly celebrated its 10-year anniversary marking a decade of positive change, strengthened communities, and healthier lives.

Held at Mission Whitten Oval’s new events space, Foundation GM Louise Perry says the night was a great celebration of the Foundation’s commitment to its community.

“It was an amazing night that brought together men and their families from all over the west who had wonderful stories to tell about the positive impact the Foundation and football club has had on their health, wellbeing, connections friendships and lives,” Ms. Perry says.

“Participants of Sons of the West talked about the way they had changed their lives after coming to the program,” she says. “One participant shared with the audience that his life had been saved because the course had taught how to identify the signs of stroke. This was the difference between life and death for him when he had a stroke.”

Sons of the West is continuing to build on its legacy in 2025, inviting past participants, new participants, and the broader community to be part of this impactful program. Whether you’ve been part of the journey or are looking to start your own, now is the perfect time to get involved.

Registrations for the 2025 program are now open. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this life-changing initiative!

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
