A striking new bridge has opened in Docklands transforming how locals move through the city by foot, bike or scooter.
Opened in April, the new shared user bridge over Footscray Road is already changing the way people move, offering safer and more direct connections to crossing busy roads and major intersections.
Inspired by the design of the West Gate Bridge, the bold green, 220-metre long cable-stay bridge over Footscray Road is suspended from two 40-metre tall pylons.
This bridge provides a seamless link between the Capital City Trail and Docklands, connecting through to the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and the broader walking and cycling network. Later this year it will also connect to the veloway, a new 2.5km elevated cycling bridge through West Melbourne.
Delivered as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, the bridge over Footscray Road is a shared user path designed for everyone. From walkers to riders and wheelchair users, they feature wide paths, gentle gradients, lighting and non-slip surfaces to make every journey easier and safer.
“We know the community has lived with disruption for a long time, so this bridge is more than just new infrastructure, it’s about restoring key commuter connections and making it easier and safer for people to get where they are going,” said Transurban Group Executive Delivery and Risk Nicole Stoddart
“This is part of a massive active transport transformation as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project that will provide more travel options for cyclists and pedestrians,” said West Gate Tunnel Project Executive Project Director Peter Lellyett.
For many in Melbourne’s inner west, these new connections fill critical gaps in the city’s active transport network particularly in areas like Footscray, West Melbourne, and Kensington.
With more upgrades still to come, including the opening of the veloway later this year, these new connections are set to become a part of daily life whether you’re heading into the city, getting to a train station, or simply enjoying a relaxed loop along the trails.
