Music Review: The Clones – Monty

Date:

Monty is the most recent release from Footscray four piece The Clones, a band helmed by identical twins that (one assumes) inspires the name. Their sound has that smooth modern Australiana rock flavour to it, with clear inspirations from bands like King Gizzard and the Lizard WIzard and The Chats.

The highlight of the song is the post-chorus breakdown, where the song tilts from something a bit surfy to something more staccato, where the ever present bass line cuts to highlight the drums, and a song that is up until that point very laid back develops a bit of a grungy edge. This feels like the band displaying that their sound has a way to go from where it is.

The accompanying music video was featured as Rage’s ‘Wild One’ in September. The video is shot from the perspective of the twins’ dog as he roams around Footscray and the surrounding suburbs while the band practises. It’s a great accompaniment to the laid-back vibes of the song and features plenty of familiar Westsider locations.

The Clones regularly pop up at local gigs so keep tuned to our local gig guide on Westsider Radio.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
