The aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifts through Soulful Spreads Cafe as volunteers, participants and trainees greet customers with warm smiles. Someone is preparing a toastie independently for the first time. Another is proudly serving a cup of tea, growing more confident with every interaction.
To many, it looks like a welcoming community cafe. To me, these everyday moments represent something much more profound: possibility.
I am the founder of Soulful Spreads, a social enterprise cafe and catering service based at the Tarneit Community Learning Centre. I created Soulful Spreads to provide meaningful opportunities for young people and people with disabilities to build confidence, develop hospitality skills and connect with their community.
My journey began long before Soulful Spreads opened its doors. Growing up in Nairobi in a close-knit family of five sisters, I witnessed resilience every day. Living alongside sisters with disabilities and chronic health conditions taught me that people can be defined too easily by their challenges rather than recognised for their abilities.
Those experiences shaped my belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to contribute, be included and be valued.
After settling in Melbourne’s west, I met families whose experiences felt familiar. I saw young people and adults with disabilities who wanted meaningful work, friendship and greater independence, but often struggled to find opportunities to demonstrate what they could do.
Rather than asking why those opportunities didn’t exist, I asked myself: “What can I do to help change this?”
The answer became Soulful Spreads.
Through hands-on hospitality experience, cooking programs and training, participants learn practical skills while developing confidence, communication, teamwork and workplace readiness. Our cafe and catering service provide a supportive environment where people can learn at their own pace, with encouragement along the way.
One participant, Leah, joined us with no cafe experience. Over eight weeks, I watched her grow in confidence. She learned to bake simple muffins and serve customers independently. She enjoyed her experience so much that she has now moved on to further hospitality training. Seeing her take that next step has been incredibly rewarding.
Other achievements are just as meaningful. Anjali, who began as a participant, now runs holiday cooking programs with young children at the cafe. Abbey has grown more confident using a knife and can now make her own sandwiches and toasties. Salma gained the confidence to independently catch the bus to the cafe and return home.
For a group of local seniors, Soulful Spreads has also become their Monday “hang out” – a place to sit, connect, chat, enjoy each other’s company and support a social enterprise that is making a difference in their community.
These moments remind me that the impact of Soulful Spreads cannot be measured simply by the number of coffees served or meals prepared.
It can be seen in the quiet moments: a participant greeting a customer with confidence, someone discovering a talent they never knew they had, a new friendship forming, or a person taking an independent step they once thought was out of reach.
Soulful Spreads is built on a simple belief: disability should never define a person’s future. With the right environment, encouragement and opportunity, people can flourish. Communities become stronger when everyone has the chance to participate, contribute and feel that they belong.
For me, food has always been more than nourishment. It has the power to bring people together, break down barriers and create conversations between people who might otherwise never meet.
That is the community I hope to continue building in Melbourne’s west – one where inclusion is not simply spoken about, but lived every day.
I invite you to come and support us at Soulful Spreads Cafe, located at the Tarneit Community Learning Centre. We are open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30am to 12pm. We also offer catering for community and corporate events, helping support our programs and create more opportunities for participants.
Because sometimes changing a life doesn’t begin with a grand gesture. Sometimes it begins with an open door, a welcoming smile, a shared meal and someone who believes in your potential.
