Mama Mee’ia – here I go again – a laksa adventure in Werribee

    Date:

Australians have developed a profound appreciation for curry laksa. In fact, from personal experience, it is the Malaysian dish that most local Australians expressed their fondness for when asked!

I like a good laksa myself, and I am always on the hunt for new restaurants or variations to this classic.

If you are in the Werribee area, pop by Mama Mee, located outside the Pacific Werribee Mall (next to Pancake Parlour) and give their laksa, amongst other Malaysian dishes, a try.

Mama Mee is a family-owned restaurant offering Cantonese and Malaysian cuisine, including a substantial selection of yum cha (dumplings and more).

The restaurant provides a more refined atmosphere than most Malaysian restaurants. The interior features warm wooden accents and bright orange hues that adds a vibrant touch, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the space. Mama Mee is spacious and therefore, is ideal for big family dinners, group-gatherings, and children.

Mama Mee offers many versions of curry laksa, but the Hakka pork stood out to me, as it’s not often found in other places, and I was delighted! Their Hakka fried pork belly was the perfect balance of crispy skin, tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat; the perfect addition to the traditional elements of a good laksa broth; rich, creamy, and aromatic. Each spoonful envelopes the palette, first with the flavours of curry, then the subtle heat of chili and herbs.

We cannot overlook the different layers of textures present among the noodles, bean shoots, and tofu puffs as well. Every bite and slurp provide a sense of comfort and satisfaction. To elevate the dish, they even offer a homemade fried shrimp paste sambal (sambal chilli) on the side.

This dish is an absolute must try!

We also ordered their Kamheong Curry Leaf Seafood Fried Rice. Another unique Malaysian dish, this ‘golden fragrance’ fried rice is an appetising dish that combines the rich flavours of curry leaves, garlic, shallots, and dried shrimp with a medley of fresh seafood. This is a stir-fry but served slightly spicy with the use of sambal. The presentation is equally appealing, making it a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

I have my eyes on their other offerings for when I make a return visit. This includes their braised pork belly, sizzling honey pepper beef, cereal king prawn, XO Pipi, and the Three Kingdom with Premium XO.

Mama Mee is located at Shop RE10/10 Heaths Rd, Werribee
