Sunday 9th October saw the winners of the illustrious Australian Hair Industry Awards 2022- Business named at a beautiful gala awards evening on the Gold Coast, with Maidstone’s one of a kind MAMAWEST taking out the AHIA Newcomer of the Year 2022. Launched in 2011 by esteemed trade visionary Linda Woodhead and the Mocha Group team, the AHIA’s- Business, are renowned as the definitive awards program of business excellence for Australia’s leading hairdressers, salons, specialist businesses, educators and professional products.

Founded by Sheridan Rose Shaw, a hairdresser with more than 16 years industry experience and a niche in creative colour, MAMAWEST is Melbourne’s first EVER collaborative coworking hair salon, which is home to 4 individual women-led businesses, and where ‘life’s too short for sh!t hair!’ Launching something so dynamic and creative was an ambitious undertaking in any environment, but to successfully launch, then grow in every way during a global pandemic was a true achievement. The demographic is as diverse as the community, with business owners, mums, rebels, people who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community making up the bulk of their clientele. The salon is a true expression of Sheridan’s exuberant personality and is painted in vibrant pinks, greens and blues, with beautiful murals featuring bejewelled animals and artwork from local artists. Through radical authenticity and generosity, dedication to inclusivity, a commitment to excellent working conditions, genuine connection to the community and industry, and business practices that have true integrity, MAMAWEST is much more than a local hairdresser.

These accolades come as a welcome reprieve after challenging years with salons and hairdressers ready to look ahead and celebrate their achievements with one another. Held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, over 600 guests enjoyed a night of dinner, drinks and dancing. The highlight of the evening was the vibrant and action-packed dance and laser performance created and produced by the incredible multi-hyphenate Adam Williams. The stunning show brought burlesque into the now, drawing inspiration from the resurgence of Club-Kid culture, the heritage of Harlem Ballroom and the vivacious volume of authentic vogue.

Linda was thrilled to name the MAMAWEST team winners for 2022; “These awards truly showcase the best that the hair industry in Australia has to offer and I can assure everyone that the MAMAWEST team are leaders in their field. We are excited for their local community to celebrate them as hair experts and to recognise the amazing impact they have.”
