Are you a member of a political party, political group, or community advocacy group? (e.g. Labor, Liberal, Greens, Socialist, My Place, Angry Victorians, Better West, environment groups, etc)

Yes, I am a member of the Australian Labor Party, but I am running as an Independent in this election. This election is self-funded, and I won’t be taking donations from any political parties, community groups or businesses.

What is the most important issue facing your electorate?
Wyndham Council is one of the fastest growing areas in the state and currently our local infrastructure is not keeping up with the needs of our community. Also, every resident of our community is feeling the pressures of cost of living, it’s essential that council works with all levels of government to find ways to ease these pressures. Finally, the wasteful spending that has occurred over the years here in Wyndham needs to stop and funds should be directed to the areas that matter to our community.

Should/how can Council support local businesses?
The Council can offer grants and promote local procurement to boost small businesses. Collaborating with industry groups for business education and networking events will foster growth.

Should/how can Council support local creatives and industries?
I think local council should create dedicated art spaces, fund community-driven cultural projects, and facilitate partnerships between creatives and local businesses. All these initiatives will help strengthen the cultural economy. A thriving arts scene is vital for our community and culture.

Should/how can Council help alleviate the impact of climate extremes on local communities and ecosystems?
I believe that council has a role to play in climate extremes but should consider it in rational and practical ways, without throwing money away. Implementing sustainable infrastructure and increasing green spaces is a good start.

Should/how can Council help alleviate cost of living and homelessness?
There are multiple ways Council can help with the cost-of-living crisis and homelessness. The Council should invest in affordable housing, strengthen and invest in its social delivery services, and partner with NGOs to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions for the vulnerable communities in Wyndham.

What should Council stop spending money on?
Wyndham Council needs to start delivering projects that are more efficient which will result in cost savings for the local community. Too many projects are run inefficiently and the burden rests on the local community to pay for this.

Should the public be allowed to ask live, unscripted questions of councillors during council meetings?
I believe we need to increase transparency within council. Publishing how councillors have voted on certain issues and making the minutes available to public (except confidential items) is a good start. I agree with the ability for the public to view council meetings live. Asking live, unscripted questions, however, I am not sure and would need to think about it more before landing on a decision.

Can you please provide a short personal statement detailing what your priorities are if elected, and what your vision for your electorate looks like.
Wyndham council “found” $36 million dollars that should have been spent on Point Cook community facilities years ago. We don’t know if Hoppers Crossing and Williams Landing have also missed out unfairly. The current group of councillors failed to fix this in four years. We need a voice that will represent us. We need change that will benefit us. I can only do that with your vote and your help. I don’t have business interests in the area because in my professional life I have chosen to work with community organisations helping them succeed. This is why I won’t be swayed against the issues that matter most to you. And I’m not interested in the base politics that so many on council pursue instead of community interest. Working together we will improve infrastructure; community services and we will get our community’s fair share. I hope you share this vision and that I can count on your support this election.

On your behalf we have asked every candidate who put their hand up to stand in Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham the same set of questions that were formulated with the feedback of the Westsider readers.

Our thanks goes to first year RMIT Journalism students, who helped contact candidates as part of their final assessment in COMM2835, Journalism: Reporting and Writing.

A big shout out to Dr Josie Vine, a Westsider regular, who coordinated the project and Dr Sharon Smith who so graciously lent us her students and devised the activity as part of their assessment.
