Children’s Week is a wonderful celebration dedicated to promoting the rights, talents, and well-being of children across the country. It’s an opportunity for communities to come together and recognise the importance of nurturing and supporting our youngest members.
Each year, Children’s Week adopts a specific theme that reflects current issues affecting children and their families. For 2024, the theme is ‘Children have the right to a clean and safe environment,’ which highlights the significance of outdoor play and nature-based activities in children’s development. This theme encourages exploration of their natural surroundings, fostering physical health, creativity, and environmental awareness.
In partnership with the Victorian Government, Yarraville Community Centre hosted two free children’s workshops which support learning through play, creativity and connecting with others in the outdoors. YCC ran a ‘Bike Wise,’ workshop focused on mastering safety and skills for outdoor fun, teaching kids essential biking techniques while promoting active lifestyles. The second workshop, ‘Sculpturing with Unconventional Materials,’ emphasised sustainability and upcycling, allowing children to explore their creativity using materials that might otherwise go to waste. This hands-on workshop develops artistic expression and instils important values about environmental responsibility.
Participation in Children’s Week activities not only support children’s development but also strengthens community bonds, creating an inclusive environment for all. Yarraville Community Centre offers childcare services through its occasional care program for infants aged six months to five years. Enrolments are available for permanent spots as well as casual bookings throughout the term.
