    Date:

Are you a member of a political party, political group, or community advocacy group? (eg; Labor, Liberal, Greens, Socialist, My Place, Angry Victorians, Better West, environment groups, etc)

I’m a proud member of Victorian Socialists

What is the most important issue facing your electorate?

    The cost of living crisis.

Should/how can Council support local businesses?

Council should put people before profit.

Should/how can Council support local creatives and industries?

Council should fund arts and culture.

Should/how can Council help alleviate the impact of climate extremes on local communities and ecosystems?

Call for a full transition to renewables and expand green spaces and bush regeneration.

Should/how can Council help alleviate cost of living and homelessness?

Call for the government to close the loopholes that allow big business to get away with paying no tax and spend that money on cost of living relief. Lower rates for low income households by raising them on big developers. Force all development to include public housing.

What should Council stop spending money on?

    Tax breaks to big developers.

Should the public be allowed to ask live, unscripted questions of councillors during council meetings?

    Yes, of course!

Can you please provide a short personal statement detailing what your priorities are if elected, and what your vision for your electorate looks like.

I’m running as a candidate with Victorian Socialists because I believe Wyndham residents deserve better. Politicians at all levels of government are in the pockets of the rich. In a wealthy society like Australia, everyone should have the chance to live a decent life. Today, the people at the top are seeing their wealth grow rapidly, while the rest of us are left behind.

Wyndham Council can and should take measures to address the cost of living crisis and make society more fair and equal. I’ve been a community organiser and activist for almost a decade. I’ve been involved in campaigns for free education, public housing, against racism and for action on climate change. In recent times, I’ve campaigned in solidarity with the people of Palestine against Israel’s genocide in Gaza. I believe councils should be a place where questions of social justice are raised and acted on.

On your behalf we have asked every candidate who put their hand up to stand in Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham the same set of questions that were formulated with the feedback of the Westsider readers.

Our thanks goes to first year RMIT Journalism students, who helped contact candidates as part of their final assessment in COMM2835, Journalism: Reporting and Writing.

A big shout out to Dr Josie Vine, a Westsider regular, who coordinated the project and Dr Sharon Smith who so graciously lent us her students and devised the activity as part of their assessment.
