BACK WHEN WE COULD TRAVEL… A PHOTO A MONTH

    Date:

For one month during Christmas /New Year 2018-19 I travelled to Myanmar with a Chin family now living in the western suburbs.

A 24 hour bus journey from Yangon to Hakka, capital of Chin state followed by an 8 hour 4WD trek we arrived in the village of Zephai, my friend’s wife’s birthplace, not far from the Indian border state of Mizoram for the Christian religious celebrations. A week later we went by motorcycle to her husband’s village, Vawngtu. I took this shot of local children at their house in the main street.

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

    Did you know?

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.
