    What a load of rubbish

Walked past the Footscray Town Hall this morning and overheard what can only be described as a heated debate about wheelie bin placement between two very animated residents and a very patient council staffer.

Apparently someone on their street keeps putting their bins out too early — like, Sunday morning early — and someone else says the bins are blocking their aura, which… okay. Respectfully. But then another neighbour chimed in and said the bins are being placed too close together, which is why the truck “missed theirs entirely last fortnight” and now it’s become a neighbourhood standoff.

The best part? One of them pulled out printed screenshots of the Maribyrnong Council waste guidelines like they were in a courtroom. Laminated. Double-sided. Respect.

I didn’t stay for the full bin tribunal, but someone mentioned forming a subcommittee. I truly love this suburb.

Anyway, just a reminder from your local eavesdropper:

    • Keep a 50cm gap between bins
    • Aura-friendly bin placement is not (yet) council policy
    • And if you’re the person putting your bins out before the weekend, maybe hold off until Sunday night. The vibe is… tense.

    Stay engaged, Footscray.

Did someone say ‘loop’ bus service? Yes please!!

Just writing in to back the idea of a Hobsons Bay ‘loop’ bus service, it makes so much sense and honestly, it’s long overdue.

As someone living in Newport, trying to get to places like Millers Junction or the businesses on Kororoit Creek Road is a hassle (without a car!). From Newport to Millers, you have to catch two buses for a trip that should be simple. And the bus that goes past North Williamstown Station to Kororoit Creek runs at such irregular times that it’s barely useful.

While I’m at it, I also want to highlight how dangerous the Hall Street pedestrian crossing at Spotswood Station is. I’ve nearly been hit by cars multiple times while trying to cross from the station side, drivers just don’t seem to see you. Part of the problem is a huge electricity pole that completely blocks the view of anyone crossing. I’ve even spoken to locals who purposely avoid the pedestrian crossing and jaywalk, just to feel safer. That should say everything.

During peak times it gets even worse! Cars build up at the boom gates and I’ve seen drivers speed up the wrong side of the road to get around traffic, either to turn right or just push through the intersection. I’ve had THREE near-misses as a pedestrian from that alone.

With all the new development going on, we need proper, safe public transport and pedestrian infrastructure in the west. A simple loop bus connecting our community and a safer crossing shouldn’t be too much to ask.
