WESTERN HEALTH COLLECTIVE TIPS AND TOOLS FOR A HEALTHIER LIFE…

    Date:

    September – Prostate Awareness Month

Prostate Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in males, and is an absolute killer, make no mistake. 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with it by the time they are 85 and the most at risk age (63%) are those men over 65. So… MEN… go see your GP and know the symptoms so you can talk about it.

GPs do a blood test to check PSA levels first and check your family cancer history, so start asking questions and stop imagining hilariously scary film scenes of GPs putting on gloves! Early detection and treatment are the key to a 95% chance of surviving more than 5 years, so in September, men of The Westsider – please go chat to your GP about your prostate health. Thank you.

Womens Health Week 2-6 Sept 2020

In western societies menopausal transition is often regarded as a negative, declining time. We could instead adopt the viewpoint of more traditional cultures, which regard menopause with respect, and as a symbol of wisdom and positive change.  Research suggests that a woman’s expectations and views of menopause have a direct impact on the severity her symptoms. Herbal medicines have been used for centuries to support women as we transition.

My experience is menopausal transition can be a time for truly awakening to one’s self.

    Headache & Migraine Week 9 – 15th September.

Headaches and migraines are sadly to common but respond very well to acupuncture. Clinical trials have shown that acupuncture may be as effective as prophylactic medication and without the unwanted side-effects.

The acupuncture point I often use is GB20, also fabulously called “Gates of Consciousness”.

The points are located on the back of the neck, at the base of the skull and on either side of the spine. Apply pressure to both points with you thumbs. Also great for a stiff neck, eyestrain and for sinus conditions.

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

    Did you know?

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.

If you're a business or community group, consider advertising in print or online, or becoming a community partner.
