    The Westsider: April, 2023

The Westsider is a not-for-profit, monthly community newspaper, written by volunteers and delivered to hundreds of pick-up points across the inner west each month.

    EDITOR’S NOTE

I’ve lived in many communities around Australia and none have created a publication quite like The Westsider.

SAM GEBRESELASSIE – THE CRAFT OF COMEDIC STORY TELLING

An incredibly hard-working comedian, he co-founded the Footscray Comedy Club where he performs regularly as well as comedy venues around the country.

AURELIA ST CLAIR ON COMEDY’S POWER TO CONNECT

Aurelia has developed a nuanced understanding of audiences and, unsurprisingly, also grown to understand herself and her comedic work better.

    THE HEALING NATURE OF HUMOUR

The art and skill of the comedy writer is woefully under-appreciated in Australia.

LIZZY HOO – COMEDY AS A PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

I felt that if I could get up and tell jokes in front of an audience then I could do anything that involved being in front of people.

CHAMPIONS OF THE WEST – FOOTSCRAY COMMUNITY ARTS

If you would like to support FCA’s invaluable work, a fundraising campaign has been launched to support the centre purchase a new accessible van.

THERE IS NO WRONG; JUST WRITE!

It was a fantastic way to rediscover a sense of play and to generate some paragraphs that might not have happened otherwise.

WOMEN’S CIRCUS – NOT JUST FUNNY BUSINESS

It’s clear that the Women’s Circus is more than just fun and games, it’s a genuine and thriving community.

    LAUGH LIKE A HYENA

It may be that hyenas are commonly vilified because humans feel more comfortable when animals fit clearly into categories.

WHY FOLLOWING YOUR PASSION IS GOOD FOR YOU!

Short courses are a great way to learn about things you’re actually interested in but don’t have a heap of time to spend doing.
