    Spotswood needs a Post Office

Since the closure of the Spotswood Post Office last year the local community and small businesses have been put to the inconvenience and expense of travelling to either Yarraville or Newport post offices for all the regular postal services.

Both these post offices have very limited parking spaces which makes it difficult for the elderly and vulnerable community members to attend and transact any postal business.

The ever expanding suburb of Spotswood needs its own post office because it provides essential communication, financial and government services for all community members and small businesses and serves as a vital community hub and anchor for local economies that goes beyond traditional mail services.

I believe we need a local post office to continue to provide a range of services which include receiving mail and parcels, selling stamps, packages, post office boxes, as well as providing additional services like bill paying, banking, passport ID photos and a range of retail goods.

A post office draws customers to the area which in turn benefits local businesses.

The local community, businesses and especially pensioners are disadvantaged by not having a local post office.

Worst park in Melbourne just got worse?

Bellairs Park [Yarraville] became famous in the pandemic [when The Age described it as “possibly the worst park in Melbourne”]. So finally our council announced an upgrade. The upgrade of the 1,000 square metre site was noted as a high priority in Council’s Open Space Strategy and the plans include a new nature play area to replace the old play equipment that was removed in late-2024. The sad reality is that the play equipment has been removed, an oversized and  ugly massive cage around a water hydrant has been installed and a dog has dug a big hole just to break up the monotony

Yep our council rates are hard at work

Calls for Council to address ‘filthy’ squat behind Footscray Library

I live in Footscray and have done so for around 13 years. I am writing to you to raise a very serious and ongoing issue with a couple of squatters living in a garage in the old Footscray Doors building that is located behind the Footscray Library. These people make the most disgusting filthy mess with strewn rubbish, furniture, food etc. all over the area outside the garage and behind the library.  I feel unsafe walking past there.

I have contacted the Council many times to get this issue resolved – and many others have also contacted the Council, including library staff –the building needs to be secured but the council will not take the appropriate action to do this.

I have sent many complaints to the Snap, Send Resolve site and while the rubbish gets cleaned up it is back there the next day or the next week.

This is a health hazard and a danger to the community and it needs to be taken seriously and addressed by the Council, who in my opinion are extremely lazy and have an attitude of not caring about the real everyday dangers that exist in Footscray.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
