We couldn’t understand how 44a worked, could someone explain for us please?
My partner and I always look forward to the crossword.
Sorry about that David – I’ll ask our crossword writer and get back to you.
Hello again David … here is a message from our crossword writer Eliesha …
Hi fellow crossword lover!! I love that you’re deep enough in the solve to be questioning answers you’ve only managed to get by filling in crossers. People wanting to properly understand their solve warms my nerdy little word loving heart.
“Ending(s) with” is a common-ish crossword convention and usually indicates a suffix. You might see a clue like “Ending with Japan,” and the answer would most likely be ESE (as in JAPANESE).
In this case it was “Endings with 22, 32, etc” and the answer was NDS. Endings plural indicates the answer will be plural, and the “ending” is ND (as in 22nd, 32nd).
If you want to dig further into the unwritten “rules” and conventions of crossword solving – you can find my eBook all about it here: https://bit.ly/AcrossItBook
Happy solving!
✌🏼 Eli..
Thankyou Barbara and Eli, I understand now. I’m quite comfortable with cryptic crossword but I’m still learning about the wordplay/devices used in these puzzles.
