    V4U: VOLLIES IN THE GARDEN

    Date:

V4U is a fun day-long event where the Victoria University community get together and volunteer their time and skills to a variety of projects throughout western Melbourne. It’s a dynamic way to give back to the local community and thank them for their ongoing support.

Royal Freemasons Footscray Aged Care is one of the regular organisations that requests the help of our V4U volunteers for projects around their facility. Previous V4U Days have seen the volunteers painting fences, verandas, gazebos, and placing planted pots around the outdoor areas of the aged care facility.

“The VU students have helped with the maintenance and upkeep of the external areas of the building while also putting a smile on the residents’ faces,” says Susi, who is one of the dedicated staff members at Footscray Aged Care.

This year, V4U volunteers will be assisting with constructing and placing garden beds, which will later be able to be filled and utilised by the residents, as well as painting and decorating an old chicken house that will later be used for a garden. Footscray Aged Care has 60 residents and a day therapy centre that is open twice a week for physiotherapy, massage and diversional therapy services.

If you know of any organisations in the west that could use the assistance of volunteers for a one-off project on October 17th, please have them email v4u@vu.edu.au.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
