For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong residents can reduce their risk, thanks to a grant from the Victorian Government’s West Gate Neighbourhood Fund. Dr Liz Cyarto, a healthy ageing expert, will lead an upbeat, free 10-week exercise program for people aged 60 and older.
“We are fortunate to have a purpose-built Seniors Exercise Park in Spotwood’s Donald McLean Reserve. Older adults can improve their balance, stability and confidence by strengthening their leg, hip, and core muscles. This means they can stay strong and independent,” says Dr Liz.
Thanks to support from Hobsons Bay City Council, Dr Liz ran a trial program at the Seniors Exercise Park in 2023. Participants were amazed by how quickly they felt stronger and more stable. Measured using standardised tests, participants’ lower body strength improved by 28%, and their balance increased by 15% after only six weeks of classes. Post-program surveys also revealed participants valued instruction, support, safety, and encouragement. They reported ‘feeling better’, being more ‘confident’ and having ‘improved mental health.’
Now called Thrive in 2025, the program will be ten weeks long. An information and registration session with a light morning tea will be held on 27 February from 10-11 am at the Seniors Exercise Park (free parking is available on The Avenue, Spotswood).
Dr Liz adds, “I’m delighted this program is being funded by the Victorian Government’s West Gate Neighbourhood Fund and auspiced by Outlets Co-op Neighbourhood House. Keeping people healthy is my mission.”
