The people have their say

Date:

By Adam Hutterer

There’s an election in sight
And the issues are alight
Beware of the bin fire of misinformation
Did you hear about the $15 billion?
Misappropriation?

The people shout at each other through the ether
Facebook, Instagram, social media
Will they think twice before they hit enter
That it’s all thanks to a data centre?

New power lines, wow, 66kv
Tall, ugly, diesel, water hungry
Cancel VNI West and burn more fossil fuel
Use AI to solve the climate crisis, that’d be cool

The tunnel that mostly isn’t
The funnel with fumes and particulates in it
The trucks are partially out of sight but still there
Maybe there’s more, do you care?

The doctor’s on a mission
For you to sign his petition
Road closures, ramps, steps and lifts
Heritage, construction and planning permits

Who knows what’ll work best for all?
What does it cost to re-open a mall?
There’s a community meeting on Thursday night
Are you going? Yes, no, definitely I might

View plans for things on a map
Ideas flying this way and that
Should it go this way, or up, or down?
What colour? Summer grey, cool beige or brown?

We’re all in this together a bowl of human soup
Do your own research, join a conspiracy group
Print more money and defund the ABC
Maybe, you should just leave all the thinking to me

The competing interests are stark
The sky will fall down if you remove a single car park
Who’s message will have the most cut through
Clicks, likes, engagement and views?

When the issues are settled, as is the dust
Information that is trust-able is a must
For something broader and wider
Your first go-to has to be the Westsider

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

Did you know?

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.

If you're a business or community group, consider advertising in print or online, or becoming a community partner.
