MAJOR CONSTRUCTION WORKS ACROSS THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT THIS SUMMER

    Date:

From early January, we’ll be carrying out a series of complex works across the West Gate Tunnel Project, changing how you’ll get to and from the city.

These works are part of our city-shaping project that will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge and give you:

Faster journeys on the West Gate Freeway

Our works on the West Gate Freeway are part of adding four new through lanes between the M80 Ring Road and the West Gate Bridge. We will also be working on the new express lanes, which will run from the M80 Ring Road interchange to the West Gate Bridge.

New connections to CityLink, Dynon and Footscray Roads

You’ll see us building an elevated roadway at Footscray Road and working on Wurundjeri Way to provide a CBD bypass and greater connectivity between the inner north, central city and the western suburbs.

    Quieter local roads

Over the summer, you will see us working on Hyde Street, Douglas Parade and Simcock Avenue in Yarraville to build new ramps to the West Gate Freeway. This will give trucks that are carrying dangerous roads and are unable to use the new tunnel direct access to Melbourne’s Port and remove them from local streets.

Plan ahead and allow extra time to complete your journey

With lots of summer construction happening across the network, make sure you check for any disruptions before heading off.

If you can, avoid travelling in peak periods, take an alternative route to avoid works, or consider taking public transport where possible.

While you’re on the road: listen to radio traffic reports and look out for digital road signs that will give you real-time advice on travel times and alternative routes.

    Hitting the road these holidays?

Make sure you’re good to go safely by prepping your vehicle and planning your journey.

Check your fuel, oil and tyres, know your entry and exit points, remember to secure any loads, and avoid sudden lane changes.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.
