LANGUAGE CLASSES UNLOCKING THE GATE TO PATHS OF POSSIBILITY

I am Zahra Nazari. I am from Afghanistan, a country that is full of kind and hard-working people and has an ancient culture and civilisation. Unfortunately, now Afghanistan is in the hands of the Taliban.

I came to Australia in December 2021, the year that Taliban invaded Afghanistan.

When I came to Australia, I was 18 years old so I had finished high school in my country and I could not go to school here. My English was not good, also I did not know anything about Australia and how to continue my study here.

So I asked my friend who has been here for a long time. She recommended the Western Melbourne English Language Program (WMEP) at Victoria University. Then in 2022, I started studying English in WMEP in Footscray. At the start, it was hard and very different and I could not understand it because the system of teaching in Australia is very different from my country. But when I understood, I enjoyed studying here and I am so pleased that I started my study here. They do not teach just English, they teach us computing and many other things that we need in our life. I met a lot of people and it is not just my English course, it is my life course that taught me many things about life.

I have a lot of plans for my future study. I will do it, but I always remember that this course made me a really hard-working person with a plan for my future. First I have plans for my English to be at a high level. Then I would love to study accounting so I will start from Certificate IV in Accounting and I will continue. I love maths and working with numbers.

Our content is a labour of love, crafted by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the west. We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

    Did you know?

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.
