Seddon icon Dave retires best chip shop in Melbourne
By Pascale Luzz
McManos chicken bar has been an iconic chicken and chip shop since 2002, when Dave Chen the former owner of McManos founded our beloved chicken and chip shop. Dave Chen opened McManos chicken bar in Seddon about 18–20 years ago!

This local chip shop has brought people together, Dave cared for every single one of his customers and never went out of style. Dave never changed his interior, exterior, or style because he didn’t need it to be modern; it was special just the way it was.
Dave was always multitasking; he was cooking, cleaning and caring for everyone else. Dave made his chicken and chips by hand and he made some of it in front of us so we could see some of the magic happening. But one of my favourite things were the posters on the outside of the shop like the one with a chicken saying “am i hot or what” with a tuxedo on, or the one with the chicken saying “wanna piece of me “ with a karate gee on. And obviously the famous “dangerously good” gravy.
Dave makes such amazing gravy. Now I have asked a few kids down at St Augustines what they loved most about McManos. Stella said “I loved just staring at all the posters outside.” Gemima said “I loved the hot chips,” and Teddy and Jimmy said “Dave was our favourite part, he was so kind to us.” So everyone at St Augustine’s Yarraville Primary School loved Dave’s chicken and chips.
We all can’t wait to see the amazing new McManos chicken bar. Thank you for continuing McManos chicken bar and honoring Dave as you continue McManos by always remembering his amazing personality. I’m sure our new owner will be incredible.
Voices for St Augustine’s – Cathy McGowan Visits Yarraville!
By Marlon F, Poppy L, Rosie, Raf M and Chloe R, Grade 3/4, St Augustine’s PS.

On Tuesday, the Grade ¾’s had a very special visitor called Cathy McGowan. She used to be a politician in country Victoria for an electorate called Indi.
Five things you (probably) don’t know about Cathy:
- She supports North Melbourne!
- Cathy has 12 siblings.
- Cathy wanted people in the country communities to live better lives. She was one of only a few women who advocated for better conditions.
- When she was little she had to learn how to speak up and stand up for herself. Cathy used this skill to help other people and to stand up for them in Parliament.
- Cathy went from being a farmer to a politician!
Cathy made us think about how we can use our own strengths to be successful and make changes to help others. We have lots of ideas for how we can make Yarraville a better place for everyone!
