HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE ‘VU VOLLIES’?

    Date:

    By Orla O’Regan

VU Vollies is Victoria University’s volunteering program. The program gives students the opportunity to participate in volunteering activities at university and in the broader community.

Each year in October, V4U (Volunteer for you) day takes place. V4U is Victoria University’s flagship, award-winning volunteer event. This year it is happening on Friday, 13 October 2017.

At V4U in 2016, over 300 students, staff and alumni volunteered across 30 community projects in and around Footscray.

The aim of the campaign is to promote goodwill and provide the opportunity for the VU community to give back to, and strengthen ties with, local community.

Responsibilities that volunteers have undertaken in previous years range from facilitating an all-abilities sports day at Footscray Park campus to gardening and painting in schools and aged-care homes.

Organisations such as Foodbank Victoria, Uniting Agewell and SHINE for Kids have been involved in recent years. If you know of an organisation in the west that could use the assistance of volunteers for a one-off project this October, please have them email v4u@vu.edu.au

We encourage submissions from our community, particularly stories about your own experiences, family history, local issues, your suburb, community events, local history, human interest stories, food, the arts, and environmental matters. Below are articles created by community contributors. You can find their names in the bylines.

It's hard to find local stories because major news suppliers have economised by cutting local journalism. In addition, social media algorithms mean we have to work doubly hard to be seen.

If you loved reading this article please consider donating to the Westsider. Support from you gives local writers an outlet and ensures an independent voice can be found in the west.
