    DEFYING SOCIAL DISTANCING RULES

    Date:

    By Margareta Olsson

While Westsiders are busy social distancing, some fungi insist on following their true nature.

This clump of Spectacular Rustgill (Gymnopilus junonius) mushrooms was spotted in April on the Bay-side of the Williamstown Botanic Garden just inside the fence. According to Melbourne-based FungiMap, Spectacular Rustgill usually thrives in clusters from several to several dozen individuals, but sometimes grows singly.

Mushrooms abound at this time of year. If you need help identifying species, email a photo to FungiMap.

And, no, Spectacular Rustgill is not safe to eat.
