A landmark moment for Melbourne’s West Gate Tunnel Project

Date:

Victorians are being offered the chance to leave a lasting mark on Melbourne’s west by helping name the twin tunnels of the West Gate Tunnel Project. With the new tunnels due to open in late 2025, the search is on for names that reflect the history, culture, and spirit of the west.

Individuals, schools and community groups to submit their ideas, and become part of the city’s transport legacy.

“Naming these tunnels is more than just a label—it’s about honouring the rich history, culture, and identity of Melbourne’s West,” said Transurban Group Executive Delivery and Risk Nicole Stoddart.

“This is a unique opportunity for the community to leave a lasting legacy on a project that will shape the way we travel for generations to come. We encourage everyone to get involved and share their ideas!”

Name suggestions could draw inspiration from local landmarks, historical figures, cultural connections, or the west’s maritime history and waterways. A selection committee will review all eligible entries, recommending a shortlist to the Victorian State Government and Transurban for final consideration. The chosen names will be revealed later this year. “We look forward to the public making their mark with suggested names for the tunnels, as work progresses to deliver the project and its benefits by the end of the year,” said West Gate Tunnel Project Executive Project Director Peter Lellyett.

To celebrate the launch students Isobel, June, Tilly and Laeto, from Footscray City Primary School visited the project site, learning about the tunnel construction and offering their own creative name ideas.

The tunnels, one leading into the city and the other heading west, will provide a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, easing congestion and improving travel times for thousands of drivers every day.

Every eligible submission will go into the draw to win a $500 Shell gift card, and the winner will also have the opportunity to nominate a community organisation or charity to receive a $2,500 donation provided by Transurban.

Submissions are open until 31 March 2025. To participate and view the full selection criteria, visit westgatetunnelproject.vic.gov.au/ nameyourtunnels.
