This October, Victorians will be voting in council elections. With the recent change to councillor wards, it can be hard to know the candidates in your local area. However, a new campaign aims to help you decide who gets your vote.
The Streets People Love campaign focuses on the things that make our streets great places to be: trees, footpaths, safety, and room for active transport options like bikes and scooters.
The campaign will help voters understand where candidates stand on these issues so that they can be confident that the person they vote for will advocate for safe, enjoyable, vibrant streets.
The centrepiece of the campaign is a candidate survey where candidates are asked about everything from whether they cycle regularly, to whether they support increasing greenery in local streets. Each candidate is then scored based on their answers and given a tick rating; more ticks means higher support for safe streets that are good for all users.
What can you do?
You can see the candidate ratings at streetspeoplelove.org and if you enter your address in the search bar then you will be shown the candidates running in your ward.
Remember to check out the website and post your vote before 6pm on Friday 25 October 2024.
Who runs the campaign?
The Streets People Love campaign is run by volunteers state-wide, with groups in each council electorate tailoring and distributing the candidate survey questions.
In Maribyrnong, this campaign is supported by several local groups, including Climate Action Maribyrnong, BikeWest, Maribyrnong Truck Action Group, and the Joseph Road Precinct Action Group.
